Final conference

FLAPP Final conference

Why this conference?

Exchange of good practices in flood management
During the FLAPP project, water managers from a variety of regions in Europe have exchanged practical experiences in flood management on a regional and local scale. Based on good practice examples, the network has analysed what obstacles, challenges and solutions have to be faced - especially in border areas - when an integrated river basin approach (river from source to mouth) is taken as guiding principle for the implementation of flood measures.

Benefits of cross border cooperation within river basins
Benefits of integrated river basin management are for example that cost can be reduced when authorities work closely together on both sides of the border. Ultimately, citizens will be better protected if responsible governments in transboundary river basins cooperate successfully.

Challenges for an integrated river basin approach
Unfortunately, despite the (potential) benefits, a true integrated river basin based approach across administrative and political borders is not always common practice in European (border) regions yet. Generally speaking, one can say that words on paper are often more patient and smooth than reality. Therefore, the FLAPP network would like to discuss future challenges to improve the implementation of an integrated river basin approach in Europe.

Presentation of results FLAPP network
During the final FLAPP conference the final products will be presented and discussed with local, regional, national and European policy and decision makers as well as expert practitioners in the field of flood management. The final products produced by all FLAPP partners jointly are:
1. A book of good practices on regional and local level
2. A joint approach to improve flood management across borders
3. Practical policy recommendations to different levels of government in Europe

Synergy with other projects and partners in Europe
Since the final FLAPP conference aims at increased synergy between flood experts in Europe, other EU projects dealing with similar issues are invited to present their project results. For this purpose a European project market will be organised parallel to the final FLAPP conference. All projects are welcome to give a reaction on the recommendations formulated by the FLAPP network.

"‘It was interesting to see the Dutch “Room for the river” project in the field. This was something I had read about but had never seen before. As a conclusion, I saw that flood prevention and nature development can be compatible as long as there is room enough. I can use this information in my own work In proposing measures to our regional government to increase the floodplain in order to prevent floods and develop nature."
